Remember how much fun it was when there was a storm and the lights went out when you were a kid... Everyone huddled around the fireplace or in a room lit by candles or flashlights and you played board games and got to eat unusual things for supper because there was no electricity for cooking? Black outs were fun family time. The TV and stereo were out of commission and you were forced to actually hang out together in the one warm and candlelit room. Well Earth Hour is March 26th and I am going to make a pitch for turning it into a Black Out Family Party! Turn out the lights, turn on the flash lights or candles and pull out a family-friendly game or activity and teach your kids something about the environment and family fun at the same time. There are a lot of over-commercialized holidays we celebrate over the course of a year, wouldn't it be nice to make a big deal out of Earth Hour? Here are some links to inspire you... and by the way, last year over 50% of Canadians took part in the lights out event.
